Gardening

I’ve officially moved into my tiny home at Village Farm Austin, a lovely tiny home community!

I was reminded yesterday why I moved here. I attended a meeting of residents who volunteer at the farm, maintain the community garden beds, take care of our resident birds, and put together events such as yoga and pottery classes. And that just scratches the surface.

They are kind, warm, and giving people. I experienced a sense of belonging immediately.

The owner of the organic farm took us on a tour and taught us gardening practices that enrich the soil. Did you know that allowing plants to go to seed, die naturally, and return to the ground benefits pollinators and increases healthy microbiomes in the soil? Sometimes we do too much. Pulling plants to have a nice, neat flower bed when the earth is better off if we let them be is just one example.

Sometimes I talk too much instead of listening. I work extremely hard instead of slowing down and allowing my mind to process and think creatively. I put intense effort into a one-sided relationship. But there are times when less is more, if I’m only willing to let go of my own agenda long enough to experience rather than manage.

I’m learning about gardening and about life. I’m embracing true simplicity. And I am grateful.
